38. Vuosi 2019 ja tavoitteet tulevalle vuodelle / Year 2019 and goals for the upcoming year

Enää muutamia päiviä vuotta 2019 jäljellä. Tämä vuosi on ollut kokonaisuudessaan melko vauhdikas ja mukava, mutta näin joulukuussa sitä odottelee jo uutta vuotta kuin kuuta nousevaa. Ajattelin tässä postauksessa hieman käydä läpi kuluneen vuoden tapahtumia ja lopuksi asettaa pienimuotoiset tavoitteet vuodelle 2020.

Cassun vuosi
Casperin kanssa kulunut vuosi on ollut vanhan kertaamista, uusien lähestymistapojen kokeilua sekä ratsukkona yhteen hitsautumista. Kun palasin vaihdosta viime vuoden lopulla, oli kaverini ratsastanut Cassua ja se olikin tosi kiva liikkeiltään ja olemukseltaan. Vaikka oma estesilmä olikin ruostunut entisestään muutaman kuukauden tauon jälkeen, oli Cassun kanssa kuitenkin helppo jatkaa estetreenejä. Ruunaa oli kuitenkin jo pidemmän aikaa vaivanneet sudenhampaat, ja ne poistettiin kevättalvella. Suun parantuessa jouduimme käyttämään hackamorea, joka osoittautuikin oikein hyväksi kuolaimeksi Cassulle. Jatkoin kyseisellä kuolaimella hyppäämistä, ja sileällä käyttöön löytyi vaihdellen suorat Happy Mouth- sekä Poponcini-kumikuolaimet.

Kun hommat oli saatu varustetasolla kuntoon, jatkui vuoden aikana treenit perusasioissa - hevosen takaosan aktivoimisessa, ryhdissä ja eteenpäinpyrkimyksen löytämisessä. Erityisen paljon huomiota tänä vuonna sai kuitenkin suoruus sekä rentona liikkuminen. Hevonen on suoristunut jo parempaan suuntaan, kun sitä on jumpattu ja ratsastaja keskittynyt oman istuntansa parantamiseen; harvoinhan se vinous lähtee hevosesta. Cassulla on myös käynyt hieroja säännöllisesti, noin kerran kuukaudessa, ja hänen käyntinsä auttavat Cassua lihaksiston ylläpitämisessä ja oikeassa käytössä entisestään. Nyt ollaan siinä pisteessä, että suurin osa ongelmista on satulan päällä, ja niitä työstettäessä hevosestakin alkaa irrota pikku hiljaa parempia pätkiä. Estepuolella Cassu tekee hyvää työtä ja omaakin jo melko varman otteen toiminnassaan, joten olen pystynyt hiomaan omia ongelmakohtiani eli lähestymisiä ja rentoutta. Pikku hiljaa, pikku hiljaa...!

Huldan vuosi
Huldan elämä etenee harppauksia eteenpäin. Kun tulin vaihdosta, kuolaimet ja suitset olivat tammalle vielä vähän epämiellyttävä asia, jonka kanssa tein paljon töitä. Nyt Hulda on jo aika ok asian suhteen, hieman se vielä toisinaan väistää suitsia mutta olen opetellut pitämään sen joko kiinni käytävällä tai peruuttamaan sen paikkaan, jossa sillä on seinä takanaan eikä näin ollen opi peruuttamaan alta pois. Pääsimme myös heti alkuvuodesta aloittamaan irtohypytystreenit, ja Hulda löysi nopeasti pitkät jalkansa ja osoitti lahjoja hyppäämiseen. Kävimmekin keväällä Kyvyt Esiin-karsinnoissa, joissa tamma sai runsaasti kehuja tekniikastaan, mutta varovaisuuden ja pienen epätasaisuuden vuoksi jäimme finaalin ulkopuolelle. Loppukeväästä kävimme myös irtopalakuvauksissa sekä opettelimme ohjasajoa.

Kesän laidunloman jälkeen Hulda on ollut kerran ohjasajettuna, jonka jälkeen keskityin opettamaan juoksutusta sekä totuttamaan tammaa satulaan. En ollut koskaan opettanut hevosta alusta asti juoksutukseen, mutta hyvän taustatyön jälkeen ja pienellä maalaisjärjellä höystettynä homma sujui aika helposti eikä satulakaan aiheuttanut hämmennystä. Kävimme syyskuun lopulla myös Ypäjän EBEF-tapahtumassa, jossa Hulda sai hyvät arvostelut rakenteestaan ja askellajeistaan kun taas esteillä hieman jännitti vaikka hypyt olivatkin ihan hyviä.

Paljon uusia kokemuksia ja asioita opittavana, mutta Hulda on käyttäytynyt mallikkaasti ja ottanut asiat vastaan hyvällä asenteella. Odotan innolla, miten työskentely nuoren hevosen kanssa jatkuu!

Yhteistyön aloitus Eetun kanssa
Eetu on ollut joukossamme sen verran vähän aikaa, ettei siitä ole vielä paljoa kerrottavaa. Huimin harppauksin on ruuna kuitenkin kehittynyt ensimmäisten kuukausien aikana, ja uskon että siitä kuoriutuu oikein makea ratsu ensi vuoden puolella. Ihana, rehti suomipoika!

TAVOITTEET VUODELLE 2020
Vuosi 2020 tuo tullessaan aivan uusia mahdollisuuksia ja kokemuksia, ja koska olen tällä hetkellä vähän hektisessä elämäntilanteessa opintojen, töiden ja hevostelun suhteen asetan tavoitteet rennon letkeällä otteella - muutoksia tulee aina, mutta asenne ratkaisee ovatko muutokset hyviä vai huonoja ;) Mitä haluan saavuttaa kunkin hevosen kanssa ensi vuonna?

• Cassun kanssa haluan parantaa sileäntyöskentelyä paljon enemmän. Haluan, että olemme harmonisempi ratsukko joka työskentelee hyvässä tasapainossa, rentona mutta koko kroppaa oikein käyttäen. Tähän tarvitaan oman istuntani kehittämistä ja rauhoittamista, hevosen eteenpäinpyrkimyksen parantamista sekä kuuliaisuuden hiomista. Estepuolella haluan jatkaa heikkouksieni työstämistä samalla kun saavutamme tasaista jälkeä esteillä. Vaikkemme kilpailisi tulevanakaan vuotena lainkaan, haluan kotitreeneissä päästä nostamaan tasoamme ratsastuksen kehittyessä seuraavalle levelille. 

• Huldan kanssa on jännä vuosi edessä - kolmivuotiskausi! Haluan jatkaa irtohypytystreenejä ja valmistella tamman Kyvyt Esiin-karsintoihin, joissa se mahdollisesti saisi suorittaa 3-vuotistestin samalla. Keväällä haluaisin myös sisäänratsastaa Huldan, ja jos kaikki sujuu hyvin, jatkaa kevyttä ratsu-uran opettelua syksyllä kesäloman jälkeen. Vielä jahkailen, onko nyt aika astuttaa Hulda vai haluanko pistää sen heti treeniin ja mahdollisesti aloittaa varovaisen kilpailemisen 4-vuotiskaudella. Nyt on talven pimeät ja kylmät päivät aikaa mietiskellä vaihtoehtoja. Jos Hulda astutetaan, se on hieman kevyemmällä treenillä syksystä alkaen. Jos sitä taas ei astuteta, ehkä pääsisin hyppäämään ekat hypyt selästä käsin sekä käymään EBEFin Nuorten Hevosten Championissa. Näyttelyissäkin olisi ehkä kiva käydä, jos 3-v testi ei ole KE-karsinnoissa mahdollinen. Tärkeintä on, että Hulda saa opetella kaiken uuden turvallisessa ja positiivisessa ympäristössä, rentona!

• Eetun kanssa jatkamme perusasioiden opettelun kanssa vuonna 2020. Rentous, käännettävyys, notkeus ja tasapaino ovat kehityskohtia joihin haluan keskittyä. Laukka on melko puhdasta, joten kasvatetaan voimaa ja kehitetään sitä vielä paremmaksi. Estepuolella toivoisin, että ruuna saisi rohkeutta ja tasapainoa ensi vuoden aikana. Se on vielä nuori, joten kehitystä tulee tapahtumaan rutkasti.

Odotan innolla, että vuosi 2020 päästään potkaisemaan käyntiin. Tehdäänhän ensi vuodestakin huikea ja ikimuistoinen vuosi!

// Only a few days left of the year 2019. This year has been quite fast-paced and nice, but in December one starts to wait for the New Year like crazy. I thought that I would look back at the past year and finally set some minor goals for the year of 2020.

Cassu's year
Casper's past has mostly been repeating the old, trying out some new ways of training and gluing ourselves together as rider and horse. When I returned home from my exchange last year, Cassu had been ridden by my friend and was quite good by his rideability. Although my own eye hor distances had become even more rusty during my riding break, it was still easy to continue from where we left off. However, Cassu had for quite a while suffered from wolf teeth, and they finally got removed in early spring. Because his mouth needed some time to heal from the operation, we had to ride with a hackamore bit, which proved to be a very suitable bit for him. I kept on jumping with the hackamore, and on the flat we started to vary between a straight Happy Mouth bit and a straight Poponcini rubber bit.

As the tack issues had been tackled, we continued working through basic stuff - active hind end, a good posture and energetic movements. Special attention was paid to straightening the horse and moving in a relaxed way. Cassu has already become straighter, since we have focused on gymnasticizing him a lot and I have scrutinized my own seat; the crookedness rarely starts from the horse. Cassu has also got regular visits from his massage therapist, who has helped him use his body even better. Now we are at a point where most the problems are above the saddle, and while working through them Cassu gets better and better. At jumping he is doing a very good job and has quite a confident attitude, which makes it easier for me to focus on my own problems like approaching the jumps and being relaxes. Slowly, slowly...!

Hulda's year
Hulda has taken giant leaps forward in her life. When I came back home from Canada, she was still a bit confused with bits and bridling, but after a lot of patient work she is pretty fine with them now. I just need to focus on having her in cross ties or backed up against a wall or fence, so that she does not learn to escape the bridling session. We also started loose jumping training in January, and Hulda soon found her long legs and showed her potential. Therefore we went to "Kyvyt Esiin", a young horse talent qualification where she received very good feedback about her promising technique. Unfortunately we did not get into the final. At the end of the spring we also took x-rays for possible OCD, and learned longreining.

After her summer vacation, Hulda was once long-reined and after that I focused on teaching her how to lunge, and also introduced her to the saddle. I had never taught a horse to lunge, but after proper research and a bit of common sense it went quite well, and she did not mind the saddle either. We also took part in the EBEF at Ypäjä in the end of September, and there Hulda received good feedback on her conformation and gaits while the jumping was more tense than usual.

So to say, we've had a lot of new experiences and things to learn, but Hulda has behaved very well and has faced all the new things with a positive mindset. I look forward to developing her further!

My new friend, Eetu
Eetu has been part of the team for such a short time, that I don't really have a lot to tell about him. However, he is developing with an incredible pace and I believe that he will become a really nice riding horse next year. Lovely, honest finn!

GOALS FOR 2020
2020 will bring us completely new opportunities and experiences, and since I'm in quite a hectic life situation now with my studies, work and the horses, I will set my goals for next year with a "chill" mindset - changes are unavoidable, but your attitude decides whether they become good or bad ;) What do I want to achieve with the horses next year, then?

• With Cassu, I want to improve our flatwork a lot more. I want us to be a more harmonized team that works in good balance, relaxed while using our bodies correctly. For this I need to really focus on improving my seat, calming down in the saddle and also improving Cassu's energy and obedience. In our jumping I want to focus on my weaknesses while we keep on delivering steady results. Even if we might not compete next year either, I want to get to a higher jumping level at least at home as our performance improves.

• With Hulda I have an exciting year ahead of us - the three-year-old season! I want to continue with some loose jumping and preparing her for the "Kyvyt Esiin"-talent qualifications, during which she might also take part in the 3-year-olds performance test. In spring I also plan on breaking her in, and if everything goes well, continue teaching her to become a riding horse after her summer vacation. I am still sitting on the fence about whether it is time to breed her now, or to put her in training and maybe start competing lightly when she turns 4. Well, I still have the dark winter days to think about that. IF I decide to breed her, she will do only lighter work in the fall next year. But IF she is not in foal, we might take part in the Young Horse Champion for 3-year olds at EBEF. It would also be nice to attend a horse show... The most important thing is that Hulda gets to learn new things in a safe, positive environment - relaxed!

• With Eetu we will keep working on the basics next year. A relaxed, flexible and balanced horse is what I am striving for. His canter is quite clean, so we will focus on strengthening him and by that improving the canter. In jumping I hope that Eetu gets more confidence and balance during next year. He is still young, so he will develop a lot.

37. Sisusta hevosaiheisesti! / Equestrian-themed interior decor!

Pienenä huonettani korostivat seinät, jotka olivat hevosjulisteiden peitossa. Sen lisäksi hyllyillä oli tauluja hevosista, merkkisuorituksista sun muista ja kirjahyllyistä tursusi hevoskirjoja. Miltä sisustukseni näyttää nyt, kun asun omassa vuokrakämpässäni ja vuosia on vierähtänyt? Olenko jättänyt mitään hevosaiheista sisustukseen - voiko niin tehdä ilman että siitä tulee liikaa? Vilkaistaanpa...

Minun sisustuksessa käyttämäni heppaelementit:

Omassa asunnossani on loppujen lopuksi melko vähän hevosaiheisia juttuja, kun mietin tarkemmin. Olen toisaalta asunut tässä asunnossa vasta nelisen kuukautta, joten ihan valmista siellä ei vielä ole. Minulta löytyy kuitenkin muutama hevosaiheinen sisustuselementti:

• Ifolorilta teettämäni mustavalkoinen canvastaulu Huldasta. Tämä taulu on minusta todella tyylikäs, sillä kuva on onnistunut ja Huldan pää on niin ilmeikäs itsestään. Tiesin jo pitkään ennen muuttoa, että tällaisen sinne asuntoon haluan, ja niin taulu lähti teetettäväksi. 

• Hevosenkengistä tehty viinipulloteline. Tämän idean sain kun joskus näin tällaisesta kuvan, unohdin sen ja sitten muuttoa suunnitellessa aloin miettiä, minne laittaisin viinipullot (olen melkoinen viinifani). Tähän oli oiva tilaisuus soveltaa hevosaihetta, koska kengät mahduttavat oikean kokoisena sisäänsä juuri viini- tai kuoharipullon läpimitan. Kaverini mies teki kaverini hevosten kengistä mallin ja maalasi pyynnöstäni telineen tyylikkään mustaksi. Persoonallinen ja kätevä, ja ainakin näin hevosihmisenä voin sanoa että just sopiva! PS. Kannattaa käyttää kuoharipulloille etukenkiä, niiden ollessa hieman leveämmät - pullot tuppaavat olemaan vähän isompia kuin tavan viinipullot...

• Kuolaimet ja ruusukkeet. En ole tuonut omia ruusukkeitani moneen vuoteen kotiin, sillä olemme ripustaneet ne kunkin hevosen oveen. Vanhempieni luona on kuitenkin liuta ruusukkeita rivissä ikkunan yläpuolella, kun taipaleeni alkuaikoina olen niitä sinne laitellut. Nyttemmin lähinnä Huldan ruusukkeet ovat käyneet kotonani, toimien tilapäisinä sisustuselementteinä ikään kuin puolivahingossa. Kerran postista tupsahti samaan aikaan varsan uudet kuolaimet, ja laitoin ne tummalle, puiselle tv-tasolle odottelemaan tallille lähtöä - niistä tuli tosi kivan näköiset sisustuksen täydentäjät! Enää ne eivät valitettavasti toimi tässä roolissa kuolainten päädyttyä ihan suitsiin niinkuin pitikin. 

Muu sisustusinspiraatio:

Hevoset ovat kautta aikojen kuuluneet sisustukseen ja koristeluun, jonka vuoksi hevosaiheiset sisustuselementit ovat yleisesti ottaen melko helposti saatavilla. Ei näitä ole myöskään kovin hankalaa tehdä itse, jos on näppärä käsistään. Hevosenkengät, jotka kuvastavat onnea, ovat simppeli ja monikäyttöinen sisustuselementti - jo ihan pelkiltään tai esimerkiksi juuri viiniitelineen, naulakon, kenkätelineen tai kynttilänjalan muodossa. 

Toinen hevosvaruste, josta saa vaikka mitä kauniita sisustuselementtejä, on jalustimet. Lamput, kynttilänjalat, katsokaa näitä!

Metalliesineiden lisäksi hevostunnelmaa saa luotua asuntoon esimerkiksi maalausten, koriste-esineiden, tapetttien tai seinätarrojen muodossa. Hauska lisä voisi myös olla klassinen enkkuviltti sohvan reunalle niille, jotka kaipaavat väriä huoneeseen. Myöskin GettheGallop-verkkokaupassa näkyi olevan tällaisia hevosaiheisia tuoksukynttilöitä metsän, vihreän heinän sekä nahan tuoksuisena. Toimisikohan...

Paljon jäi varmasti vielä ideoita heittämättä ilmoille, mutta tässä nyt sellaisia elementtejä, jotka ovat silmiini iskeneet ja painuneet mieleen. Voisin melkeinpä hyödyntää mitä vain näistä joissain määrin sisustuksessani, mutta katsotaan mitä yksiöön saa laitettua niin, ettei se näytä satulahuoneelta ;)

// When I was a kid, my walls were covered in horse posters. My shelves were packed with horse paintings and framed pictures, and the book shelves were full of horse books. How does my home decor look nowadays, when I live on my own and years have passed? Have I left anything equestrian-themed in my interior design - or is that possible without making it "too much"? Let's have a look...

Equestrian elements I use in my home decor:

In my rental apartment, I actually have quite few horsey things if I think about it. However, I have lived in this particular apartment only for four months, so it is not yet fully done. I still have some equestrian interior elements:

• A black-and-white canvas painting of Hulda ordered from Ifolor. This painting I consider being quite stylish, the photo is incredible and Hulda has a beautiful face. I knew far before moving, that this is the painting I want, so I immediately had to order one.

• Wine rack made of horseshoes. I got this idea sometime long ago when I saw a picture of this kind of wine rack. When I was planning my moving, I thought about where to keep my wines (I'm quite a fan of wines, yes...). Then it was a good chance to include some horsiness in this, since the horse shoes fit wine bottles perfectly (in a big horse's shoe size, not ponies). My friend's boyfriend made me this using my friend's horses' old shoes and also painted the wine rack black as I wished. Unique and practical, and at least as an equestrian I can say that this is perfect for me! PS. I recommend using front shoes (=usually wider) for champagne/sparkling bottles, since the bottles tend to be bigger than regular wine bottles..

• Bits and ribbons. I haven't brought my ribbons home in many years, since we hang them on the placed horse's door. However, there is a bunch of ribbons hanging upon my old room's window at my parents. Nowadays only Hulda's ribbons make it to my apartment occasionally, on their way to the stable maybe. Once her bit also came from the mail just at the same time I had her ribbon at home, so they got to play a "interior element"-role on my wooden desk - they actually looked quite cool! Unfortunately, they are not used for interior anymore since I took the bit to Hulda's bridle.

Other interior inspiration:

Horses have been a part of decorations and interior design for ages, which makes the equestrian decorations quite easy to find. They are also not that hard to make by yourselves either, if you are handy. Horseshoes, symbolizing luck, are a simple and diverse decor item - just like that or as a wine rack, coat hanger, shoe holder or candle holder, to name a few.

Another equestrian item that makes incredible decorations, is a stirrup. As a lamp or candle holder for example, look at these!

In addition to the metallic items, you can add some equestrian spirit into your house by using paintings, decoration figures, tapestry or walldecor. A fun addition could also be the classic Newmarket Blanket hanging on the sofa, for those who want some color in the room. Also, the GettheGallop online store seemed to have these equestrian-inspired scented candles in wood, fresh grass and leather. Wonder how they would work...

I probably left some great ideas untold, but at least here you got items that I have noticed and remembered throughout the years. I could actually use almost any of these decoration items, but at the moment it is quite difficult to fit everything into a one-room apartment without having it look like a tack room ;)

36. Suomi - lemppari (este)kisapaikkani / Finland - my favorite show(jumping) locations

Tänään juhlitaan Suomen itsenäisyyden päivää. Itse olen saanut harrastukseni ansiosta matkailla ympäri Suomen kaupunkeihin, jonne ei ehkä muuten olisi tullut lähdettyä. Laskin, että olemme vuosien varrella tarponeet yli kahdessakymmenessä eri kisapaikassa, ja vielä ei ole yhtäkään huonoa paikkaan tullut vastaan. Ja koska kisataukoa on kohta kertynyt yli kolme vuotta, en ole lainkaan päässyt kokemaan näitä uusimpia kisapaikkoja, kuten esimerkiksi Ratsastuskeskus Ainoa, Stall Solbackaa, Stable Novaa, Powerparkia. Ne vaikuttavat kuitenkin hulppeilta puitteiltaan, joten toivottavasti pääsen joskus tulevaisuudessa kilpailemaan sielläkin. 

Miksi jauhan kisapaikoista Itsenäisyyspäivänä? No, kunnioittaakseni suomalaisuutta haluaisin jakaa muutamia lemppari-kisapaikkojani vuosien varrelta. Ne eivät kaikki ehkä kuulu "trendikkäimpiin" paikkoihin, mutta luettuasi postauksen saatat ehkä tietää paremmin, miksi joku paikka on valikoitunut lempparikseni! Ja koska en yksinkertaisesti osannut päättää, mikä on näistä ehdoton paremmuusjärjestys, ovat paikat täysin sattumanvaraisessa järjestyksessä. Ja huomioikaa, että olen tosiaan viimeksi kilpaillut kunnolla 2016, joten osassa kisapaikoista on saatettu tehdä kunnostustöitä pohjien sun muiden osalta tässä välissä.

//Today we celebrate Finland's independence. I have, through this incredible hobby, gotten to travel around this country to cities, where I might never had traveled otherwise. I counted that we've been at over 20 different show locations during the years, and there has not been a single bad one. And since I've had a break from competitions for soon over 3 years, I have completely missed out on the new, fancy arenas like Ratsastuskeskus Aino, Stall Solbacka, Stable Nova and Powerpark. They seem amazing, and hopefully I will get to compete there in the future.

But why am I going on about show locations on Independence Day? Well, to respect finnishness I wanted to share some of my favorite show locations from the years that I've competed. They might not all belong to the "trendiest" places, but if you read the entire post you might undestand why I chose them as my favorites! And because I simply could not put them in any order, they are randomly listed here without any "better" or "worse". And please note, that I haven't been competing properly since 2016, so some of these facilities might have gone through some renovations after I have been there.

"Niihama" - Tampereen Ratsastusseura ry

Niihama on toiminut meidän "kotikenttänä" kilpailujen osalta siitä asti, kun 10-vuotiaana aloitin kilpailemisen seura- ja aluetasolla. Tampereen Ratsastusseura ry:n kisapaikalla on hyvät puitteet järjestää kisoja vuoden ympäri - iso kilpailumaneesi (40x90m), harjoitusmaneesi (22x76m) sekä iso ulkokenttä (68x120m). Kisoja järjestetään säännöllisesti eri tasoilla, tilaa on jopa nuorten ja villimpien hevosten kanssa ja kalusto sekä pohjat ovat hyvät. Täällä me tykätään kisailla aina kun mahdollista!

//Niihama has been our "home arena" during competitions ever since I started competing locally as a 10-year-old. The location, that is owned by Tampereen Ratsastusseura ry, has good facilities for organizing competitions all year - a big indoor arena (40x90m), an indoor warmup arena (22x76m) and a huge outdoor arena (68x120m). There are competitions regularly on various levels, and there is enough space also to come there with a young/green or fresh horse and in addition to that, the ground and the jumps are good. This is where we like to compete as often as we can!

Luvian Ratsastajien kisakenttä on ollut satunnaisesti mukana kisarepertuaarissamme, aina kun on ollut siihen hyvä väli. Luvia on kotitallilta sopivan ajomatkan päässä, ja ison kisakentän vieressä on sopivan kokoiset verryttelyalueet molemmille suunnille. Estekalusto on kivan näköistä, ja homma pelittää hyvin. Plussaa, että verkasta voi koko ajan seurailla mitä kisakentällä tapahtuu. Luvialla on myös, ainakin muutama vuosi sitten, ollut edulliset kilpailumaksut, joten silläkin syyllä on kiva käydä täällä kisailemassa. Ainut miinus on, että pohja saattaa mennä äkkiä hyvinkin raskaaksi jos on satanut paljon tai jos kelit ovat todella kuivat. Kivoina kesäpäivinä erittäin hyvä kisapaikka!

//This arena, owned by Luvian  Ratsastajat ry, has been part of our competition "collection" for many years, always when there has been a good time for it. Luvia is not too far from home, and right next to the big sand arena there is a nice warmup, with separate areas for the right and left leads. The jumps are nice, and everything works well. A big plus for being able to follow what happens in the ring while warming up. Luvia has also, at least when I have been there, less pricey show fees which is also a good reason to go there. The only minus is, that the sand might get too heavy if it rains too much or if it is way too dry for too long. However, a very nice place during the best summer days!

Suojakallion Hevosurheilukeskus - Korpilahden Ratsastajat ry

Myöskin Korpilahdella ollaan käyty kesäisin niin kauan kuin jaksan muistaa. Vaikka rekan kanssa parkkeeraaminen tuo toisinaan omat haasteensa, ovat Suojakallion kilpailut aina olleet erinomaisesti järjestettyjä, kaikki on otettu huomioon ja jopa kaatosateella homma pelittää. Kilpailukenttä on ISO (60x100m), jaettuna todella tilavaan verryttelyalueeseen ja isoon kilpailuareenaan. Estekalusto on täälläkin todella kiva, pohjat pitävät myös karmivilla keleillä - kerran osui raju ukkoskuuro kohdalle juuri meidän kisapäivänä, ja pohja oli täysin kisakelpoinen! Viereisessä metsikössä menee myös ihanat lenkit, joissa levottomampia hevosia voi kävelyttää tai verrytellä. Ihana paikka.

//Korpilahti is another place where we've been to during summer as long as I can remember. Although parking with the lorry sometimes gets a bit challenging, the shows at Suojakallio have albays been well organised, everything has been taken into consideration and even during heavy rain things work. The arena is HUGE (60x100m), divided into a spacious warmup ring and a big show ring. The jumps are nice and the ground keeps its quality even under horrible weather conditions - once there was a heavy thunderstorm on the day we were competing, and the arena was almost as good as new! There are also nice tracks to walk on in the forest next by, if you have horses who need to walk a lot. Lovely facility.

Tätä valintaa tuskin tarvitsee kovin paljoa perustella? Ypäjällä on puitteet ihan jokaiseen lajiin, joka vuodenajalle. Neljä isoa maneesia, useita hiekkakenttiä sekä suuri derby-nurmikenttä takaavat monipuoliset kilpailualueet, ja koska koko Hevosopiston alue on suunniteltu hevosia varten, on parkkitilaa, kävelytysalueita ja ratsastustilaa hyvin kaikille. Kalusto on hyvää, pohjat toimivia (tosin derbykenttää vähän varon itse sateisella kelillä vaikka siinä hyvä pito onkin), ja järjestäjät osaavat hommansa. Ypäjällä järjestetään aktiivisesti erilaisia tapahtumia, ja olen myös Huldan kanssa tykännyt käydä juuri Ypäjällä varsatapahtumissa - onhan koko infrastruktuuri hevosharrastajia varten suunniteltu.

//This choice needs very little motivation, I guess? Ypäjä has the facilities for any equestrian sports and every season. Four big indoor arenas, several sand arenas and a giant grass-derby arena ensure versatile competition possibilities, and since the entire Equine College area is planned for horses there are enough room for parking, hand-walking and warming up. The jumps are well-kept, the grounds work well (although I am a bit cautious with the grass arena when it rains, even if it is quite solid), and the organizers know what they do. There are a wide range of events organised at Ypäjä, and I also like to go there with young horses and foals - the infrastructure is planned entirely for equestrian use, so it is a great place to bring green horses to as well.

Pohtiolammen Ratsastuskeskus - Kangasalan Ratsastajat ry

"Pohtis" on meidän toinen lähipaikka kilpailujen osalta. Usein kävimmekin vuoroin Niihamassa ja vuoroin Kangasalla, ja välissä Ypäjällä. Pohtiksella pidetään kesäkisoja, ja kenttä on hyvän kokoinen (71x81m) ja sen lisäksi vieressä on 40x60m verryttelykenttä. Täällä järjestetään kivoja kisoja kaikilla tasoilla, ja vaikka parkkitila saattaa isoissa kisoissa jäädä ahtaaksi mahtuu sinne tosi hyvin niin rekalla kuin trailerillakin. Mahtavinta on ihanat maastoreitit aivan parkkipaikan ja kisakentän vieressä, jolloin hevoset saavat kunnolla verryteltyä ennen suoritusta tai kotiinlähtöä. Ainoa miinus täällä, kuten Luviallakin, on pohjan raskaus/liukkaus kovalla sateella ja liiallinen pehmeys kuivina aikoina, Kenttää huolletaan hyvin kisojen aikana, joten tämä on kiva kesän kisapaikka!

//"Pohtis" is our other "home arena" when it comes to competitions. There were actually seasons, when we only competed at Pohtis and Niihama, with some variation of Ypäjä maybe. Pohtis is a summer competition facility with a big sand arena (71x81m) and a 40x60m additional warmup ring. They organize nice competitions on all levels, and even if the parking lot might be totally crowded during bigger shows, it is easy to handle both with a lorry and a trailer. The most amazing part about this location is the lovely forest trails just next to the arena and parking, which makes it easy to warm up and cool down the horses enough. The only minus here, as in Luvia, is that the arena might become heavy/slippery during heavy rainfall and too soft at dry weather. However, the arena is well taken care of, so this is a very nice place for summer shows!

Korpikylässä olemme käyneet ainoastaan kerran, viimeisenä kunnon kisakautenani Korpikylä Spring Tourissa. Tänne lähtisin toistekin - ison kilpailukentän lisäksi käytössä oli kaksi maneesia verryttelyyn (pienempi hyppyihin, isompi sileän verryttelyyn)! Silloin kisasin sekä nuorilla hevosilla että vähän verkassa kiihtyvällä hevosella, jolloin näin monipuoliset verryttelymahdollisuudet olivat kullan arvoisia. Estekalusto on hieno ja pohjat hyvät, ja järjestäjät olivat asiansa osaavia.

//  We have only been to Korpikylä once, during my last proper competition season. I would gladly go there again - in addition to the big outdoor arena they have two indoor arenas for warm up (a bigger for flatwork and a smaller for jumps)! At that time I was competing with young horses and a warmup-crazy mare, and these facilities were golden for me with them. The jumps are pretty and the grounds are good, and the organizers know what they do.

Riihimäen ravirata - Riihimäen Ratsastajat ry

Riihimäen Ratsastajien iloisissa kilpailuissa olen päässeet käymään kahdesti, ja kerran olemme sen lisäksi olleet menossa mutta vedenpaisumus peruutti sen reissun. Riihimäen raviradan keskellä on iso verryttelykenttä (molempiin suuntiin), sekä tilava kilpailukenttä. Parkkitilaa on reilusti, sillä kyseessä on jälleen hevosurheiluun suunniteltu alue. Riksun kisoissa on aina ollut iloinen henkilökunta ja kivat puitteet kilpailla, ja menen mielelläni uudestaan kun sen aika on!

//I have had the chance to participate in Riihimäen Ratsastajat's joyful competitions twice, and we were supposed to go once more but the show got canceled due to flooding. Inside the racetrack there is one big warmup ring (for both leads) and a big show ring. There is also a lot of parking space, since the area is planned for equestrian sports. We have always been welcomed by a happy group of organizers, and I will definitely come back whenever it is time for that!

A gift card is simple, since the receiver can decide for themselves how and when tu use it. The traditional gift cards are usually intended for a certain shop, in equestrian's cases mostly tack stores, and the sum is free of choice. But if you want to create something personal, come up with your own gift card! Examples: if you live with your parents (even if you don't), how about a cleaning- or cooking gift card (cleaning the entire house or cooking a delicious dinner at an agreed time)? Or a feeding/stable cleaning gift card for the stable owner (one or many feeding shifts at an agreed date), caretaking gift card for your friend's horse, or something to do together? Only the sky is the limit when planning a personalized gift card!

If you know an equestrian friend of legal age, who also enjoys wine - what would be a more clever gift than an equestrian-inspired wine bottle? I don't think Alko has too many wines with an equestrian themed label on right now, but there is at least the Californian wine producer Dark Horse, that has both a white and a red bottle designed with their signature horsehead. Since there also may be kids reading this blog I will not post a link to the website. If you want to personalize the wine bottle even more, you could order or design a label of your own!

I like to bake, and for many christmases I have baked something for my friends and relatives, for example reindeer cookies and biscottis. I have considered chocolates and fruit cakes as well, but have not yet been completed...
