Yllättävän moni tammanomistaja lainaa tammojaan varsan tekoon, mikä on aivan mahtavaa meidän hevosettomien kannalta.

Myöskin ehdot on hyvä varmistaa. Mitä esimerkiksi tapahtuu, jos tamma ei tiinehdy? Jotkut oriasemat tarjoavat seuraavan kauden edullisemmin, osa taas eivät.

Varsan aluille laitto - oriasema

Kulut
Koska jokaisella oriilla on omat hintansa, en sano mitään täsmällisiä summia mitä minulta tähän projektiin oli tässä vaiheessa mennyt. Mutta listaan ylös kaiken, mihin rahaa meni tällaisella diilillä:
- Tallivuokra - koska lainasin tammaa Kristiinalta, maksoin hänelle tallivuokraa.

// Many horse lovers dream of owning a horse. You can do whatever you want, whenever and almost anywhere with an own horse. Then there are those (smart) people, who know what it takes and therefore don't want to own a horse although it sounds like fun. But what about a foal, could it be a good idea? Why would I buy a foal? What does it cost? What do you do with a foal and how does the whole thing proceed?
That's why I wanted to write a series of blog posts about buying a foal for those who might think about buying a foal or just want to know what it's all about. In this part I am going through things to consider before the foal arrives and what it might cost. Please keep in mind that I am a first-timer/amateur, so if something is missing or you have something in mind I recommend turning to an experienced breeder/foal owner.
To be honest, I never really thought "wisely" about buying a foal. I knew what it costs to have horses and all the additional costs that might occur, but still I wanted to buy my own. Why I chose a foal was mostly because I'm crazy and "because it's less expensive than buying a grown and experienced horse". That is not a very smart way of thinking, since before breaking in the foal you will most likely to spend as much money on the foal as the experienced horse would cost. For me, however, it was the only option since I would not have been able to afford an experienced horse in my taste for many many years.
Buying a foal - born or unborn?
Foals can be bought after they are born at any moment, or then one can take the risk and buy an unborn foal like I did. A ready, already born foal is an easier and less-risky choice since the horse is already born, which means that you save money in the breeding costs and you don't have to live with the risk that the mare does not become pregnant or something goes wrong. With horses it is anyway important to know, that also this born foal is a risk - it can get sick, hurt itself or die just as quickly. Therefore, buying an unborn foal contains many more factors - you need a mare, a stallion, a vet, a stud, a place where the mare will be foaling.. In addition you need the mare to be in foal and carry the foal for 11 months, after which the foaling should go without problems before you will even see your own foal for the first time.
I was still interested to be part of the project as a whole, because this would still be my first own horse. And because I was (am still) young and stupid and did not realise that money could also be saved, I was ready to put all the money I got from work and graduating into this project even if I knew, that I might not even get the foal alive.
Choosing a mare
If you decide to buy an unborn foal, the first thing to do is choosing a mare for your foal. If you don't have a mare of your own, you can lease, rent or "borrow" one from a friend or a stranger. Surprisingly many mare owners borrow their mares for foaling, which is just amazing for us horseless people. I myself wanted a standardbred showjumper with a good pedigree and good results. There were as many choices as there were different pricings. Finally my friend told me about her friend's mare, that was available for breeding and the mare would stay at the owner all the time. After a few loooong calls we had a deal - the mare was Daffodil's Baronet. "Irkku" was a bit smaller than my ideal horse, a bit lower and her pedigree was not that familiar to me, I was used to the german pedigrees that my aunt's horses had. My friend had already one foal from her and I had also got the chance to ride Irkku's first foal and I liked him a lot. Both foals were well-behaved and had a super attitude, and the mare left them a lot of the qualities of the sires as well, which made the foals a bit bigger, too. I am not a professional, so I trusted the instinct that the foals were a way more important factor to me than choosing a big-sized mare with exactly the pedigree that i.e. Cassu had.
It is also important to check that the mare is reproductively sound before the breeding season starts.
Choosing the stallion
Once the mare is chosen, it was time to decide the sire for my foal. Or that's how it usually goes. However, I had first found my favourite stallions, and after finding the mare I started thinking how well they were suited for each other. I knew something about the jumper pedigrees, but since I wanted a foal that was as good as possible I turned to professionals. Lovely sporthorse breeder Minna Nieminen told me about Irkku's pedigree and told me what stallions could go best with her and why. Irkku has a lot of thoroughbred in her, and in the damline you can find good thoroughbred blood in i.e Lucky Boy xx, who appears in many good jumpers' pedigrees. The damline had also quite old dutch stallion lines. The sire Irco Mena had also left behind many good jumpers and eventing horses, so Minna recommended (based on the pedigree, the mare and her foals) that I choose a big, scopey, calm stallion with an excellent jumping technique. I also got some breeding lines that would fit her best, and honestly I had over 20 favourite stallions at this moment. Finally I chose Chacoon Blue - my friend got her second foal by Irkku, and the pretty foal was by Chacoon Blue. Also, Schockemöhle stallion station in Germany was a safe choice with good deals for mare owners. Chacoon Blue is a modern, well put-together stallion with a good canter, a very good jumping technique and a good rideability.
When it comes to getting the mare pregnant, you might want to know the quality of the stallions semen. If the semen is of proof quality it will most likely not work, no matter how fertile the mare is. You will find out about the quality by simply asking the stud farm owners. However, an amateur don't usually have to worry about these things if the stallion has an agent, which most of the European stallions in Finland do.
The beginning of a foal - at the stud
At this moment Irkku's lovely owner Kristiina helped me a lot. Since Chacoon Blue had fresh semen, Irkku could be bred almost in the neighborhood of her home stable. I lived so far away from Irkku that her owner fixed everything until the foal was born and weaned from her mother, and I was just mostly the one who paid for all this. It was actually a relief, since I also started studying that fall. When whe had chosen the stud farm where the mare was going to be inseminated, Irkku was brought there for controls. When the timing was right, the semen was ordered from Germany and they arrived the following day. A vet was ultrasounding the mare regularly to see how far the heat was. After a succesful insemination the mare had her pregnancy check in 14-17 days, and there the embryo was!! One more check at day 30 to see that everything was okay, and then the waiting could begin.
Another option is home breeding, in which I don't have any experience. This can be a bit more expensive, though, since the vet needs to visit the mare often because of the heat and pregnancy controls and the insemination. At stud farms these ordinary veterinary fees are usually included in the seasonal fee.
Expenses
Since all stallions have individual prices, I can't tell any specific sums for what a foal project will cost. But I will list up all the expenses I faced to this moment:
So this was the first part of the series. We went through important factors to consider before buying a foal and all costs that might occur during the process. Next part will be all about the waiting for foaling and the first days in a foals life!

- Season fee and shipping costs for the semen - I paid a seasonal fee for Chacoon Blue, which means that they send you semen all season as long as needed. In addition every shipment cost around 90 euros
- Stud fee and vet costs - even the stud had a seasonal fee for inseminations, they kept on going as long as needed. The vet costs appear if the mare needs some special treatment, in my case one small treatment was needed.
- Gas - I paid the mare owner for the gas she used while picking up the semen order from the airport
